Improving maternal and infant health through home visiting nurse, doula and community health worker

The aim of the project is to provide support to high-risk pregnant and parenting Somali women through community-based home visiting nurse, doula care and community health worker (CHW). The goal is to identify and assist women who require additional support during the pregnancy and postpartum period to reduce complications from mental illness, medical comorbidities and improve infant mortality.

The project's objectives include offering culturally and linguistically compatible care through certification training for doulas, CHW, providing lactation, newborn care, and culturally sensitive home visiting nurses. The project will include monitoring blood pressure, assisting with incision care, promoting sleep hygiene, conducting mental health and substance screenings, and ensuring follow-ups for newborns, among other services.

The project envisions that screening maternal mental health will result in reduced harm to both the mother and baby, ensuring the healthy development of the newborn, and decreasing postpartum complications through assessment, education, and support. It also seeks to increase awareness of mental health needs among women in the Somali community.

Partnerships with organizations such as NAMI, county-based home visiting nurses, doula programs, MN community health worker alliance. Public health organizations are essential for reaching the target population. The project seeks to improve the overall morbidity and mortality among Somali mothers and babies. We hope to extend this project to other communities in Minnesota experiencing similar problems.
